Barbara Bui Le Parfum- a discontinued gem [and a draw to celebrate a milestone]

I have JUST hit 500 followers on Twitter, and that has me pleased as punch, so I'd like to thank all of my loyal Twitter followers and blog readers by having a giveaway for a full bottle of an extraordinarily delicious (but discontinued) fragrance, Barbara Bui Le Parfum.

Barbara Bui is a fashion designer and her eponymous perfume was created by perfumer Ann Flipo. It is a soft, ultra dry vanilla-based incense fragrance similar to Atelier Cologne's Vanille Incensee. The major difference between the two scents is that Atelier Cologne's has a citrus top note that is pretty distinct when you compare them side-by-side.

notes: spices, incense, jasmine, white musk, sandalwood, heliotrope, cedar and amber

Barbara Bui is an EDP but wears more like an EDT-- I usually spray quite liberally to get the desired strength. At first I was a little annoyed that it wore so lightly, then I realized it was nice to have a thinner, airier sleep scent, or just something easy, cozy and light to spritz on before I run out the door. Not everything benefits from beastly sillage. This is an uncomplicated woody Oriental with dryness that is optimal for hot weather. For Oriental lovers that can't bear to give up that type of perfume in the summer months, Barbara Bui is ideal. It is the quintessential "refreshing Oriental". It is wildly enveloping in its powderiness, something I really appreciate about it.

I am having a random drawing for a 30ml bottle of Barbara Bui Le Parfum, so leave me a comment and tell me which discontinued perfume you would bring back if you had the power.

I'll go ahead and tell you mine: Penhaligon's Lily & Spice. It was very recently discontinued, which is unfortunate because there is no finer representation of lilies in a perfume. I'll be very sad to see it go.

The drawing will close this Friday, July 1st at 1pm Central US time, so make sure to leave your comment by then. Drawing is open to anyone, anywhere. Winner will be announced here on the blog on Friday afternoon and should claim their prize by emailing me their mailing address to:  eyelineronacat at gmail dot com

[Barbara Bui Le Parfum can still be found for good prices via Amazon.com third-party sellers, snap them up before they're gone! My bottle was purchased by me for my personal collection]
**UPDATE: they are super-scarce on Amazon as of right now [thanks for the heads-up, Jennifer], though it looks like a couple of 3oz bottles are still for sale. There are also some decent deals on eBay**

7/1/11: The draw is now closed. Please head over to THIS POST to find out who the winner is!

  1. It is not a perfume,as I truly did not get to point of affording such things till I hit 40! But when I was a girl there was a cologne that was called Babe. I wore it daily, spritzed everything in sight...was my signature scent. Got it for every special occasion. They stopped making it when I was in High School and I started stealing my Mom's White Diamonds LOL

  2. If I had the power, I'd bring back Deneuve.

  3. Ooh, I love a good giveaway! Well, I've always been a Chanel #5 gal, so I've never really had a scent that was discontinued! But boy I'd love to win this delight...a gal always need new parfume to spritz on! :)

  4. I think for me right now, it would be pre-reformulation Chanel 19. But I've always wanted to try Deneuve, too, so that would also be on the list.

No need to enter me in the draw, but congrats on 500 followers!

  5. Congrats on 500 followers! *throws confetti*

I'm not perfume savvy enough to have a discontinued love and wouldn't want to claim this bottle from someone who will really love it. Just wanted to say congrats. :)

  6. I truly wish they would bring back the original formulation of GAP Grass along with the frosted glass bottle with aluminum cap and all. The new one just doesn't smell the same. Shame on me for leaving my old bottle behind when I moved away to college. I'm pretty sure my Dad used it up as bathroom air freshener. :/

Another scent I'd love to have again is Tocadilly by Rochas which I also used as a preteen along with GAP Grass, There are bottles available but nothing in the bottle size/price range that I want.

Another scent that's still available but has since had it's formulation changed is Banana Republic W. It just doesn't come close to the depth that it had back in '95. Ok, so we've pretty much established that GAP Inc. sucks in regards to reformulating it's old scents! Le sigh.

Thanks so much for having this giveaway!! xx

  7. Congratulations Carrie ~~##~~## Ruby, OMG Babe, I remember that too. I can almost smell it. Sweet and girly. Oh! wow discontinued, I don't know.. Maybe one you like that has been reformulated, I have only sampled the new version - The original Balmain vent vert (is that the Germaine Cellier version?)

  8. Hi,one perfume I'd hate to see back is 'Tweed' by Lentheric. Created in 1933 I remember it being a really sweet sickly smell on older woman when I was growing up in the 70s!
I'm in love with Le Labo Iris 39 at the moment.
I live in London and there is a fantastic little perfume shop in Columbia rd called Angela Flanders, her 'Earl Grey' is of of my faves.

  9. I would bring back Le Feu d'Issey, but I am gobsmacked right now that Lily&Spice is being discontinued! A shame!
How generous of you to do this giveaway! :)

  10. I love giveaways! :) And this is such a generous one - btw, congrats on 500 followers! :)
Regarding discontinued perfumes, I wish I was interested in perfumes when the first Aqua Allegorias were around, those are the perfumes I'd love to have tried.
And in another category, I wish they'd bring back Vent Vert in original formula.

  11. Many congratulations on your milestone. My OH tweets so I understand the excitement!

As for discontinued perfumes, I would wish to have "eau rose" by agnes b back again, the most divine rose and lemon scent for a hot day. I wore it when I went to salsa classes so it is associated with fast rhythms and laughter. A good fresh and sunny rose that lasted and lasted on me; it was perfect. (Sighs.)

  12. Thanks for the great giveaway!

I wish they would bring back YSL Nu EDP, a great perfume in a weird bottle that should not have been discontinued!

  13. Wow, I've been wanting to try this for a while, so thanks for the giveaway! Gosh sooo many discontinued fragrances I want to bring back. I feel they are my little orphans and I must collect them. :^) The one I most want back from oblivion is always the one I have never tried and can't get my hands on! Right now that may be Doblis. (Or maybe Ralph Lauren Tuxedo... or Weil Noir...)

  14. Congratulations on reaching 500 followers!
I've never tried the Barbara Bui- sounds yummy..

I have heard rumors about Caron Alpona being discontinued - if that is true, I'd definitely want it back..Some of my faves have been reformulated not discontinued and I'd love the earlier version back (I am looking at you Caron Poivre!)

Oh and I'd also like L'Arte di Gucci and Tom Ford Moss Breches back .

  15. I heard that Paco Rabanne Calandre is discontinued and I was sad....except that I've got a back-up bottle in the refrigerator. I would like to bring back the parfum form of this scent. I owned it when I was in college. It was gorgeous. There are lots of outstanding perfumes to choose from that have not been discontinued, of course, but there's nothing quite like your first love.

  16. Congratulations on the milestone, and thanks for the giveaway! Barbara Bui is amazing, and I would love to have a bottle of it.

I would like to bring back Guerlain Attrape Coeur. Also YSL Nu, Le Feu d'Issey and the original formula of Emeraude.

  17. I'd bring back pre-reformulation Miss Dior. I miss it terribly.

And Givenchy III would come back, too, if it were up to me.

  18. Thank you, everyone for your comments/entries so far! I must say- Marte- I'm with you on the Attrape-Coeur. I've only recently decided that I can't live without it. Unfortunate timing.

  19. Congratulations Meredith for your followers and for the quality of your blog.

Being a guy I would love to see Shiseido Basala brought back. But I would also like to be able to buy a bottle of Le Feu d' Issey. When I first smelled it I was a budding perfumista and the thought of buying it for me never crossed my mind. I bought it for a friend. She never liked it and I never go the guts the ask her the bottle back.

  20. memoryofscent: Excellent choice on Le Feu d'Issey! I know it is a favorite of Olfactoria, and I also loved and wore it a long time ago. She recently found a bottle and sent me a sample from it- and it's even better than I remember. It's the perfect acidic, peppery perfume.

  21. There is a shadow of it in Etro Etra I think.

  22. Congrats on your 500 Twitter followers!
At this time of year I usually find myself yearning for the long-discontinued Nina Ricci Bigarade from the 70's. And I have to second the call for a return of L'Arte di Gucci. I try to avoid thinking about most of the still-in- production-but-post-IFRA re-formulations of scents I have loved. Have to admit I'm curious about the return of what's being called, in the US, Shiseido Zen Classic (Zen in the black bottle).

  23. Great draw! I would love to see the real Miss Dior with pre-IFRA ingredients. Does that count?

  24. The draw is now closed, I will be announcing the winner shortly! Thank you to everyone who commented and entered.

  25. Lily & Spice is no more? Where the hell have I been?

Also, need to tell you that I love Vanille Incensee. Why do dry vanillas make me so happy?

    ReplyDelete
  26. Gawd I love Vanille Incensee. I really go crazy for dry vanillas too. Barbara Bui is a great one. If Vanille Incensee didn't exist, I'd be a lot more upset about Barbara Bui being discontinued.

Yes- Lily & Spice is discontinued and is currently on sale for 50% off in the UK, but I was told they don't ship here to the US. I'll figure out how to get another bottle at a discount. Gotta have a backup.
